Golf Traders Newsletter, 27th August, 2012

G’day Golfers,

Hope you’ve had a good week. This is the 30th Golf Traders Newsletter, enjoy the read…..

Golf News:

Congratulations to Nick Watney for winning the Barclays Championship this morning (Australian time).

Watney turned a two-shot deficit against Sergio Garcia into a three-shot lead in a decisive four-hole stretch around the turn at Bethpage State Park Black Course, and no one got closer than two shots the rest of the way. Watney made a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 2-under 69 to capture the opening event in the FedExCup Playoffs.

With the win, Watney takes over the top spot in the FedExCup standings for the first time since the final week of the 2011 Regular Season. With the top spot in the FedExCup standings, Watney is assured a shot at the $10 million prize at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola next month. It could also be a big step toward an event that doesn't pay anything at all -- the Ryder Cup.

The Tour now heads onto the Deutsche Bank Cup in the race for the Fed Ex Cup.

This Week's Golf Tip:

Want to wedge it close like Tiger, take a look at these wedge tips from Golf Coach Jim McLean, as seen in golf digest.

FEEL IT WITH THE FEET

Look at Tiger's left foot: It's not flared out toward the target, which is something a lot of golfers do. Setting the front foot square at address helps the lower body shift toward the target on the downswing so you can squeeze the ball off the turf. If you flare out the foot, the tendency from a narrow stance is to spin open and not shift. I also see a relaxed right leg here. He has pushed off his right instep, indicating a good weight transfer. You feel good wedge shots with your feet.

CHECK THE RIGHT ARM

Notice how Tiger's right arm has moved across his chest and matches his shoulder plane: This right-arm-across move proves he has maintained the width of his swing and has swung the club on the correct in-to-in path. Unlike many amateurs, Tiger has no impulse to scoop the ball, which is why you see no bend in his right arm.

STAY DOWN THROUGH THE SHOT

Tiger still has the same upper-body tilt toward the ground that he created at address. This is commonly referred to as "staying down through the shot." That doesn't mean keeping your head down. It means your spine angle doesn't change. If it does change, your chances of making solid contact really drop. Like Tiger, you can watch the shot fly without coming out of your address posture--simply rotate your head.

MAKE A THREE-QUARTER SWING

Tiger is posing in a cut-off finish. This three-quarter swing is great for any lie, but it's definitely the way to hit a controlled wedge to an uphill green, as Tiger's doing here. If you go full out on a wedge swing, the ball flight balloons, making distance control a guessing game. You want the lower, boring ball flight you get from a three-quarter swing. Just remember to take one more club and grip down slightly because you won't hit it as far with this shot. A shorter swing will help you make ball-first contact--ball then divot. After impact feel as if you're posing with the shaft pointing to the sky. Don't let it continue on and wrap around you or hit your back.

McLEAN is ranked No. 3 by his peers on Golf Digest's list of America's 50 Best Teachers. He's based at Doral Golf Resort & Spa, in Miami.

Congratulations to Rory McIlroy for winning the US PGA Championship this morning. The talented 23 year old McIlroy fired a flawless final round 66 to win the Championship by a record 8 strokes, becoming a two time major winner.

McIlroy seized control with back-to-back birdies Sunday morning to complete the storm-delayed third round with a 67 and build a three-shot lead. No one got closer than two shots the rest of the way, and McIlroy closed out a remarkable week by playing bogey-free over the final 23 holes of a demanding Ocean Course.

With his win, Rory has become the world’s number 1 golfer and has moved up to number 2 on the USPGA Tour money list with $4, 905, 492 in prize money.

A Little History about the US PGA Championship

In February 1916 the Professional Golfers Association of America was established in New York City. One month earlier, the wealthy department store owner Rodman Wanamaker hosted a luncheon at the Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle. This gathering of Wanamaker with the leading golf professionals of the day prepared the agenda for the formal organization of the PGA.

The new organization's first president was Robert White, one of Wykagyl's best-known golf professionals of the time. Golf historians have dubbed Wykagyl "The Cradle of the PGA". The first PGA Championship was held later in 1916 at Siwanoy Country Club in Eastchester, New York.[3] The winner, Jim Barnes, received $500 and a diamond-studded gold medal donated by Rodman Wanamaker. The 2011 winner, Keegan Bradley, earned $1.445 million. The champion is also awarded a replica of the Wanamaker Trophy, which was also donated by Wanamaker, to keep for one year, and a smaller-sized keeper replica Wanamaker Trophy.

Initially a match play event, the tournament was changed to stroke play in 1958. Network television broadcasters, preferring a large group of well-known contenders on the final day, pressured tournament organizers to make the format change.[4] During the 1960s, the PGA Championship was played the week following The Open Championship five times, making it virtually impossible for players to compete in both majors. In 1965, the PGA was contested for the first time in August, and that move was made permanent in 1969, save for a one-year move to February in 1971, played in Florida.

The PGA Championship is primarily played in the eastern half of the United States, only ten times has it ventured west. The last championship played in the Mountain Time Zone was in 1985 and the last in the Pacific was 1998 at Sahalee near Seattle; no western venues are currently scheduled through 2018, which will be the 100th PGA Championship.
