Supreme Winner

Hello Golfers,
On Sunday we witnessed more history being made, following on from Peter Seniors win last week, we have a young champion who was making toppings for pizzas and working part time jobs in order to survive.
"I was making pizzas for five years and I worked for months as a traffic controller with a stop-go sign to get the money to go to European Tour School in 2010," Popovic said.
Popovic, ranked 1251 in the world, was rated a $401 chance before the tournament began. However, he led from the opening day and held his nerve over the remaining 54 holes to secure his maiden win as a professional.
Popovic started the final day with a with a two-shot lead over fellow Victorian Anthony Brown, but it was Pampling who threatened to ruin the fairytale. Pampling was unable to sustain his charge and the supreme Popovic charged home with a birdie, par finish.
Having made nothing on the goldfields of Kalgoorlie for the humble WA PGA just two months ago when he shot 80-75 to miss the cut. He struck gold in Coolum instead with an Odyssey Metal-X #7 putter he'd only had for a week.
"My confidence over the putter is unbelievable and I hope I can play every single round for the rest of my life with that confidence," he said.
"It's a funny story. I saw how good Ian Poulter putted at the Australian Masters and how good Luke Donald's stats were this year on the PGA Tour so I thought 'what the hell' why aren't I using that sort of putter," Popovic grinned.
Congratulations Daniel and all the best in your new golfing life.

Other News

A leading figure in the golf world, who edits one of the sport’s top magazines with a readership around 500,000, is calling for a boycott of Donald Trump’s Scottish course.
Bill Elliott – editor-at-large of Golf Monthly – has vowed never to set foot on the course after watching the documentary You’ve Been Trumped, broadcast by the BBC in October.
And the influential chairman of the Association of Golf Writers urges the publication’s readers to do the same, saying: “I suggest you join me.”
Think there may be something more going on between the two parties. Trump’s course has definitely divided many opinions, but only time will tell if the hype translates into the finished product.

PRO TIP:

Dry, Firm Fairways

The summer sun can really bite this time of year and leave fairways dry and dusty. When the fairways are like this simply changing your ball to one with a softer cover and higher spin rate will help your game.
Try taking one less club, as there is extra bounce from the hard fairways.
Have a great Christmas and a Happy New year.

A Senior Moment

Hello Golfers,
Forget youthful exuberance, forget daily gym work outs, and perfect golf swings that come straight out of the textbook, what you need is competiveness and Peter Senior showed us and the entire field on Sunday how to win.
In a round where the young guns fell by the way side, Senior kept ploughing the fairways and hitting greens and missing them in the right places, his accuracy off the tee was impressive and his short game was great too. I wonder how he would of faired if the new long putter rule would have been introduced, but with such strong winds it was mighty impressive to control the long stick.
Can Senior repeat what Chalmers did last year and win the double, I would not bet against it, and pray for some bad weather so that his ultra competitiveness can shine through. Senior played down his chances of victory this week.
" I think you better keep your money in your pockets, lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice," he said.
Senior said a while back that his game was well suited to Coolum.
"Coolum has been a good hunting ground for me and I've played pretty well here over the last few years and won twice around here," Senior said.
"I'm definitely more consistent than I have ever been and I have to thank (swing coach) Gary Edwin for that, we have worked pretty hard on certain areas.
"It's a course where the longer hitters don't have a great advantage, it's more about placement and if I can putt as I did last week, who knows."
I don’t know about you but the odds sound good and there will be lots of bets being placed on this modern day legend of the game.
"I am pretty pleased with the way I've played over the last three years, hopefully I can get another two or three years out of it and then I'll probably call it quits."

Other News

Darren Clarke wants to strike another blow for golf's "dinosaurs" at Coolum this week and he is unflustered by the circus surrounds created by resort owner Clive Palmer.
"There are a few of us old guys out there, but it is the first time I've seen a dinosaur on a golf course," Clarke, 44, said with a wry smile after saluting Peter Senior's Australian Open triumph at 53.
The dinosaurs and the whole Clive Palmer fiasco (really it’s always the same with Clive!) has not put Clarke off at all, he still rates
the course and let’s hope he can raise his game and challenge
for the title.
Clarke shrugged off the grass signage eyesores and the free-drop rule that has been created to give players relief if they land a ball on the paint or the dinosaur.
"It's different, but it is what it is. The course is as good as ever," Clarke said.

When the Wind Blows

We saw in the Australian Open how the wind affects
the ball.
Into the wind: Take plenty of club, grip down the shaft and take a three quarter length swing. The idea is to impart the least amount of spin possible so that the ball drills through the wind with a lower trajectory.

Charming Champion

Hello Golfers,

Was it really a year ago that the mild mannered West Australian Greg Chalmers won the Australian Open in sensational fashion, and then followed up bagging the PGA a week later? How time flies.

Well the wait is almost over, the much anticipated return of the Australian Open is to be staged at the Lakes G.C. this Thursday, featuring some of the world’s best players, including Justin Rose,
Adam Scott, John Sendon, the legendary Tom Watson and defending champion Greg Chalmers.

Greg Chalmers is relishing the chance to play alongside eight-time major winner Tom Watson as he aims to defend his title at this week's Australian Open. The left-hander has been paired alongside Watson and youngster Jake Higginbottom for the first two days of the Open.

Chalmers contacted Tom Watson and some other all time greats for advice, it appears that Chalmers is working extremely hard on his game, as I personally witnessed last year when I saw him hitting balls on the range at 7.30am in the morning after he won the PGA. The man is dedicated and the results are starting to reflect his efforts.

"I played a practice round with Tom Watson. I wrote him a letter. There were some things this year that I had not done or it was a while since I had done them.

"I spoke to Tom, I spoke to Nick Price this year, Paul Azinger. I'd love to chat to Greg Norman, too.

"I wanted to get into Tom's head a bit and find out if I was on the right path. The game comes very easily to some people. I think he (Watson) is one of them."

"It is a battle for me. If you can stand over the ball with one thought in your head, you are about 1000 steps in front of most guys," he said.

"Sometimes I wish I was a lot better at it, other times I am thankful I can process a few things.
"It's a strength of (Watson's). That why he has won eight majors and all those tournaments. It is something to aim for."

"There are the majors and then you want to win your nation's Open.”

Chalmers and his playing partners will tee off in the afternoon groups, just after midday on Thursday, with the likes of Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy, John Senden and world No.4 Justin Rose all playing in the morning.

Belly Up
Should belly putters be taken out of golf? American golf great Tom Watson says there should be a ban on Belly Putters. "I agree (it should be banned), and I say that with mixed emotions," Watson said.

"My son Michael has a conventional putting stroke and couldn't make it from two-feet half the time. He went to a belly putter and he makes everything. The game is fun to him.

"And there lies the danger. To take away the ability of people to have fun because it is not a stroke of golf? I firmly believe it is not.

"Do we go to two sets of rules, so people can use it in certain competitions and the PGA Tour can't? I don't know.

"I thought Ernie Els said it perfectly when he won last year's Open Championship. He was asked why he went to the long putter and he said, 'He was cheating like the rest of them'.

Other News
Australian golfer Steve Bowditch wrote a great tweet after his q-school experience, emphasising how hard it is to get a place on the tour.

"Bowditch: What I just went through, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. #qschool "

Job well done.

PRO TIP:
Downhill Putts
With fast, firm, quick greens at this time of year getting the ball to stop near the hole becomes harder on those tricky downhill lies. Instead of hitting the ball in the sweet spot, try lining the ball up with the toe and striking from that position.

Hitting the ball from the toe instead of the middle will give the ball less momentum and deaden the strike, resulting in more putts getting nearer the hole.

And now for some history....as new players will commence on the PGA tour next year, let's take a moment to reflect on how it all started: Here's a bit about the History of US PGA Tour:

With an increase of revenue in the late 1960s due to expanded television coverage, a dispute arose between the touring professionals and the PGA of America on how to distribute the windfall. The tour players wanted larger purses, where the PGA desired the money to go to the general fund to help grow the game at the local level. Following the final major in July 1968 at the PGA Championship, several leading tour pros voiced their dissatisfaction with the venue and the abundance of club pros in the field. The increased friction resulted in a new entity in August, what would eventually become the PGA Tour. Tournament players formed their own organization, American Professional Golfers, Inc. (APG), independent of the PGA of America.

After several months, a compromise was reached in December: the tour players agreed to abolish the APG and form the PGA "Tournament Players Division," a fully autonomous division under the supervision of a new 10-member Tournament Policy Board. The board consisted of four tour players, three PGA of America executives, and three outside members, initially business executives.

Joseph Dey, the recently retired USGA executive director, was selected by the board as the tour's first commissioner in January 1969 and agreed to a five-year contract. He was succeeded by tour player Deane Beman in early 1974, who served for twenty years. The name officially changed to the "PGA Tour" in 1975.

In late August 1981, the PGA Tour had a marketing dispute with the PGA of America and officially changed its name to the "TPA Tour," for the "Tournament Players Association." The disputed issues were resolved within seven months and the tour's name was changed back to the "PGA Tour" in March 1982.

Golf News:

Congratulations to Tommy Gainey for his win in the McGladrey Classic this week. Gainey shot a final round 60 that included 8 birdies and an eagle to breakthrough for his maiden PGA Tour win.

"It feels like I'm in a dream," Gainey said from Sea Island Golf Club, where he finished at 16-under 264, one shot ahead of David Toms and two in front of Jim Furyk. "I'm just waiting for somebody to slap me up side the head or pinch me or something to wake me up."

Interestingly, Gainey wears two golf gloves, one on each hand, which has earned him the nickname Tommy ‘2 gloves’ Gainey.

This Week's Golf Tip:

This week’s golf tip is from Bill Haas, as seen in golf digest, here are Bill’s tips for hitting your driver far and straight:

GET SET, GO

You can control so much about the shot before you swing. Things such as gripping it lightly, making sure your alignment is correct and that the ball is forward in your stance so you don't get ahead of it at impact. These points matter, so don't take them for granted. Go ahead and check off each thing before you pull the trigger.

√ STAND TALL

I think posture is key. When I stand taller, I feel like I can get my arms swinging through better. The last thing you want is to have to stand up during the downswing to create room for the club to hit the ball. If you do, you'll make it a lot harder to hit it flush.

√ TAKE YOUR TIME GOING BACK

I like to feel my swing is slow and languid. Luke Donald is definitely one to try to emulate in this department. The key to having good tempo is to take more time getting to the top of the backswing. You really have to let it finish before you start down. Turn until you can't turn anymore. You'll produce effortless power.

√ SWING THROUGH IT

I consider myself a swinger as opposed to a hitter. With irons I'm not a picker; I definitely take a divot after I hit the ball. But when I'm hitting driver, my goal is to swing through the ball like it's not even there. I don't want to just hit the ball, I want to hit the ball with the clubface aiming down the fairway and keep the clubface closing all the way until the follow-through. Sometimes I use the thought of hitting the far outside of the ball to do this.

Congratulations to Swede Jonas Blixt for wining this weeks PGA Tour Fall Series event at CordeValle.

In true Happy Gilmore fashin, Blixt decided to play professional golf after becoming overly frustrated with Ice Hockey.

"I was more interested in hockey. I wanted to be a hockey player," the Swede said Sunday after his breakthrough victory in the Frys.com Open. "I never really got big enough or good enough to play. Golf kind of suited me pretty well." Blixt was a defenseman and played hockey well into his teens.

"It's the greatest sport ever," he said. "The lockout just kills me." The third PGA TOUR rookie to win this season, Blixt holed a 4-foot par putt on the final hole for a 3-under 68 and a one-stroke victory over Tim Petrovic and Jason Kokrak. It is unclear in what place ‘Shooter McGavin’ finished the round nor whether he was even in the event, but Blixt’s Happy Gilmore like performance would even gain the praise of Bob Barker this week.

This Week's Golf Tip:

This week’s golf tip is from Adam Scott, as seen in Golf Digest. Here is how Adam plays a fade shot:

'I naturally draw the ball, but I can get the hooks going if I'm not careful. So it's important that I reduce the amount of right-to-left curve by trying to fade it. To pull it off, I feel as if I'm making a more deliberate move through the ball and really keeping my arms from rolling over. I call it "holding off the shot." I'm keeping my arms quiet with far less forearm rotation and delaying the closing of the clubface. You can see here my hips have turned significantly toward the target before the club has reached the ball. That's a good fade feel for me'

This Week's Golf Tip:

Just like you, when I tee it up, I try to clear my mind of swing mechanics as much as possible. But I've played in enough pro-ams to know that my amateur partners really have a tough time doing that. If that sounds like you, and you're struggling to consistently hit the ball solid, allow yourself just one swing thought when you play--and stick with it.

Golf News:

‘Epic’ was one word a journalist used to describe Europe’s win today in the Ryder Cup.

Erasing some of their worst Ryder Cup memories, the Europeans wore the image of Seve Ballesteros on their sleeves and played their hearts out Sunday at Medinah, to match the greatest comeback in history and head home with that precious gold trophy. Jose Maria Olazabal squeezed his eyes and fought back tears when Kaymer holed a 6-foot par putt to beat Steve Stricker and give Europe the point it needed to keep the cup.

This was the first Ryder Cup since Ballesteros, the soul of European golf in this event, died last May of a brain tumor. Olazabal wanted his team to wear navy blue, Seve's favorite color, and added a clever touch -- his iconic silhouette on the sleeves of their shirts.

"This one is for all of Europe," Olazabal said. "Seve will always be present with this team. He was a big factor for this event for the European side, and last night when we were having that meeting, I think the boys understood that believing was the most important thing. And I think they did."

It was Poulter who gave Europe hope Saturday evening when he made five straight birdies to turn a loss into a win and swing momentum in Europe's favor. Poulter was up to his fist-pumping, eye-bulging tricks again on the final day, winning the last two holes in his match against U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson.

And he had plenty of help. Europe's top five players in the lineup all won, including Rory McIlroy, who was lucky to be playing. McIlroy thought his match was at 12:25 p.m. -- it was listed in Eastern time, not Central -- and needed a police escort to get to the course with 10 minutes to spare. Then, he came up with key birdies to hand Keegan Bradley his first loss of the week.

The biggest match might have belonged to Justin Rose. He was on the verge of losing to Phil Mickelson when Rose holed a 12-foot par putt to halve the 16th, made a 35-foot birdie putt from the back of the 17th green to win the hole, and then closed out Mickelson with a 12-foot birdie on the last hole.

Six of the 12 matches went to the 18th hole on Sunday. The Americans won only one of them.

Golf Traders Newsletter, 24th September, 2012

G’day Golfers,

Hope you’ve had a good week. This is the 34th Golf Traders Newsletter, enjoy the read…..

Golf News:

Congratulations to Brandt Snedeker for winning the Tour Championship, and as a result, the Fed Ex Cup.

Snedeker was the only player in the last 5 groups to break par. For his efforts, he was awarded a three-shot victory over Justin Rose (71) to win the TOUR Championship, his second win this year and a trophy that came with $1.44 million. Add the $10 million bonus from the FedExCup, and it's the richest payoff in golf.

The 31-year-old from Nashville, Tenn., calls that kind of money "crazy talk ... like winning the lottery." Far greater perspective came from a 30-minute hospital visit Sunday morning with Tucker Anderson, the son of his swing coach who was critically injured in a car accident and is in a responsive coma.

"I asked him if he thought I was going to beat Rory McIlroy, and he gave me a wink," Snedeker said.

He beat McIlroy out of the FedExCup, and everyone else in his way at East Lake. Ryan Moore was tied for the lead with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, only to make bogey on the last three holes for a 70 to tie for third with Luke Donald (67).

McIlroy had won the last two Playoff events and three of his last four tournaments dating to his record eight-shot win at the PGA Championship. He still is virtually a lock to be voted PGA TOUR Player of the Year, but he had to settle for second place -- and a $3 million bonus -- in the FedExCup.

This Week's Golf Tip:

This week's golf tip is from Tiger Woods, as seen in Golf Digest.

Golf's best short-game players possess great instincts, soft hands and an understanding that short shots are simply miniature full swings. Most of the same fundamentals apply, including keeping your body turning toward the target through impact. You need to stay connected -- upper body and lower body turning in sync -- especially when pitching.

Most poor pitchers are totally out of sync during the downswing. They freeze the upper body and overuse the lower body, or they get handsy in their delivery of the club to the ball. Both moves make consistently solid contact a problem.

I like to feel fluid and unhurried on my pitch shots, my tempo as smooth as Freddie Couples' full swing. That helps me synchronize my upper body with my lower body. I want to feel as if I'm pitching the ball with my big muscles -- shoulders, chest, hips and thighs.

I regulate distance with the length of my backswing and trajectory through club selection and ball position. I don't think of swinging my hands and arms slower or faster. And, above all, I try to keep my torso turning through the shot.
