Congratulations to Marc Leishman for winning the USPGA Tour’s Travellers Championship. Mark fired a final round 8 under par round to win by 1 shot, beating Bubba Watson, Charley Hoffman and Tim Clark down the stretch to claim his first USPGA Tour win. Mark now moves up to 27th on the USPGA Tours money list and up from 160 in the world to number 78. Moving inside the world’s top 60 is now a real possibility for Leishman. The tour now heads onto the AT & T National at Congressional Country Club. The field consists of world notables including Tiger Woods, Nick Watney, Adam Scott, and Dustin Johnson.

This Week’s Golf Tip:

This week’s tip is from Coach Jim McLean, who takes a look at one of golf histories great swings, Sam Snead… Some have said Sam was the greatest athlete ever to pick up a golf club. Some say he was the greatest player of all time. Some refer to his 81 victories on the PGA Tour, the most ever. Some say his shooting under his age in a PGA Tour event was the most amazing fact (a 66 at age 67). Some might argue it was that he shot 60 at age 71 on the challenging, par-72 Upper Cascades course. It's hard to hang one tag on Sam Snead, but if I had to, I believe it would be "He had the sweetest swing in the history of the game."

Sam's ageless swing surely speaks for itself, but allow me to point out some of his signature positions, like the famous "sit-down" move. Many of today's tour players study this move. Nobody did it better. Notice also his one-piece takeaway, the powerful coil, how his left wrist, arm and clubface are in line at the top. See how his right arm is in the perfect "throw" position on the way down. Note how his right heel is slightly up at impact, his weight well on his left side. Congratulations to Webb Simpson for winning the US Open earlier taoday (Australian time). Simpson’s weekend rounds of 68, 68 for a total tournament score of +1 was good enough to edge out his competitors and claim the first major of his career. McDowell had a chance to level it up on the 72nd hole but unfortunately for the Northern Irishman his birdie putt missed. It was the third time in the last seven years that no one broke par in the U.S. Open. On all three occasions, the winner was in the locker room when it the tournament ended. With his win, Simpson now moves up to 9th in the Fed Ex Cup and has become the world’s 5th ranked golfer.

Webb Simpson's third shot, 18th hole, Sunday

Simpson didn't know exactly what was at stake when he knocked his approach to 18 to the right greenside rough, but he certainly knew the ensuing chip would be important. Uh, yeah it was. With the pin tucked near the front of the green and with his ball in an uneven lie, Simpson still sent a delicate chip to four feet from the hole. When he made the putt, he took the clubhouse lead at one over -- good enough, it turned out, for his first major championship.

Jim Furyk's tee shot, 16th hole, Sunday

So unflappable through much of the final round, Furyk's swing got quick at the worst possible time. Tied with Simpson on the 16th tee, Furyk said he was surprised by the USGA's decision to move the tee up, and it played at least a part in the ugly sequence that followed. Furyk snap-hooked his drive deep into the rough, leaving him no choice but to punch back to the fairway. When he was unable to get up and down for par, he gave Simpson a lead he would never relinquish.

Beau Hossler's birdie putt, first hole, Friday

An opening 70 made 17-year-old Beau Hossler a nice story on Thursday. But a strong first nine followed by a birdie on No. 1 made him the story on Friday. Hossler's putt for a three on the 520-yard par 4 gave him the outright lead. He would stumble at the finish, but remain in contention throughout the weekend. Not bad for a kid who still has his senior year of high school ahead of him.

Tiger's third shot, 18th hole, Saturday

By the time he reached the final hole, Tiger's third round had already qualified as a disaster. But here is where it was cemented. With his ball in the greenside rough, Woods was looking to nestle a chip close to the flag and save par. Instead, he flubbed the chip, barely advancing it more than a few feet. A bogey led to a 5-over 75, along with a host of "I've got that shot" wisecracks from hackers everywhere.

Congratulations to Dustin Johnson for winning the Fed Ex St Jude Classic. With his win, Dustin moves up to 20th on the US PGA Tour money list, and 10th in the world rankings. The tour now moves onto the US Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Ken Venturi, a member and club champion in the 1950s, calls Olympic “the sleeping lady" because it is so deceptive. Distances on the card have little to do with reality. Johnny Miller, the first junior member on merit because his parents didn’t belong, calls it “the most no-nonsense course in the world.’’ Olympic, according to the World Golf Hall of Fame author and journalist Dan Jenkins is “where the wrong guy wins every time." Does this mean a relative unknown will win? Nine Australians will tee it up, these include Geoff Ogilvy, Jason Day, Adam Scott and Aaron Baddeley.



US Open Special: The History of the US Open

The first U.S. Open was played on October 4, 1895, on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. It was a 36-hole competition and was played in a single day. Ten professionals and one amateur entered. The winner was a 21-year-old Englishman named Horace Rawlins, who had arrived in the U.S. in January that year to take up a position at the host club. He received $150 cash out of a prize fund of $335, plus a $50 gold medal; his club received the Open Championship Cup trophy, which was presented by the USGA. In the beginning, the tournament was dominated by experienced British players until 1911, when John J. McDermott became the first native-born American winner. American golfers soon began to win regularly and the tournament evolved to become one of the four majors. Since 1911, the title has been won almost exclusively by players from the United States. Since 1950, players from only six countries other than the United States have won the championship, most notably South Africa, which has won five times since 1965. A streak of four consecutive non-American winners occurred from 2004 to 2007 for the first time since –1910. These four players, South African Retief Goosen (2004), New Zealander Michael Campbell (2005), Australian Geoff Ogilvy (2006) and Argentine Ángel Cabrera (2007), are all from countries in the Southern Hemisphere. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (2010) became the first European player to win the event since Tony Jacklin of England in 1970.…..
