How to Match your Clubs to your Game

This is an excellent post made online by golfclubconsultant. Matching your golf clubs to your game is important for playing better, and enjoying your golf more!

What equipment is more important to golfers than their golf clubs? With a consistent swing, and the right clubs, playing good golf is much easier. The problem is that there are so many different brands and types to choose from. How do you know which ones are right for you? Once you’re certain about which ones you want, how do you know you’re getting the lowest price?

Drivers

A good drive is twice as long as a major league home run, but must be several times more accurate if you have any hope of playing from the fairway. I guess we can be grateful that golf is the only sport where the ball is not moving. It’s important to have a good driver--and not just a good driver--but one you have confidence in. The difference between a great round and a round with several lost balls is your driver.

Fairway Woods

On long courses (or any course with a par 5), you must have fairway woods that you can rely on. Even on courses that are short, fairway woods are great to tee off with, as some holes just don't set up for a driver. A strategy that is gaining in popularity is replacing your long irons with woods or hybrids.

Irons

Irons are also an important part of the game, and there are dozens of brands to choose from. Consideration should be put into what the flex of the shaft should be, and whether you’re of average height or extra tall or short. This may infleunce the lie angle of the club which is very important.

Wedges

The short game is so important to your score, and wedges are a big part of the short game. A pitching wedge usually comes with the set of irons, but depending on how many clubs you carry, you may have to find your own gap wedge (usually 52°), sand wedge (usually 56°), and lob wedge (60°). This is a great part of the game to practice, as you can save yourself a lot of strokes with a good short game.

Putters

Nothing has driven more men to suicide than the stock market and three-putting. The secret here is to get a putter you like and have confidence in, so when you’re standing over that three footer, you can knock it in. All of the brand-name putters on the market today are well designed. Confidence in your putter and your ability (which comes from practice) are the most important aspects of putting.

Hybrid Clubs

Hybrid clubs are sometimes known as utility clubs. You may want to consider adding a hybrid club to your bag; they’re such versatile clubs. They’re great for when you have a tight lie. Who wants to hit a 3 iron from a lie that is less than ideal. Who really wants to hit a 3 iron from any kind of lie? The long irons are difficult to hit, and hybrids are so much easier. You can even use them for long putts and bump and run shots.

Women’s Clubs

Women generally have slower swing speed, so special consideration should be given to more flexible shafts. Also, women are more likely to benefit from having irons with graphite shafts, which are not as heavy as steel shafts.

Junior Clubs

Clubs for kids are designed more for their height, and you can get golf club sets that are very reasonably priced. The other great thing about junior golf is that they can play in tournaments at great courses for just a few dollars. The golf industry wants to get kids addicted to golf, so that they can have a life-long golf addict paying full price. Of course the low prices are fun while they last, and it’s possible for kids to get involved in playing golf at a reasonable price.

We carry a vast array of clubs at Golf Traders, we cater for everyone! We can also measure you up for the correct shaft, grip size and lie angle to make sure your next set of clubs are perfect for you.

They feature a "leaner" more subtle profile (more standard width top line etc...) than their original "ZING" predecessors.

The Ping Anser 2 Putter- an all time Classic in stock NOW!

We currently have Ping Anser 2 Putters in stock (the model in the photo on the left is on sale ) in both left and right handed models. This putter is an all time classic. It has been used by golfing legends Tiger Woods, Greg Norman, Mark O'Meara and Robert Allenby to name a few. Here's a product review below:

Setup & Alignment
Hard-Avg-Easy
The Ping Anser 2 sets up wonderfully behind the golf ball. You don't have to worry about the putter turning in our out at address, it set's up square each time you set it down. The plumbers neck and sight line make it extremely easy to line the putter up right on the ball as well as to the sweet spot of the putter. I've also putted with the Ping Anser and found that I would at times be putting the ball towards the heel of the putter without knowing it. With the sight line on the Anser 2 that isn't a problem.

Feel
Soft-Avg-Crisp
This is not the softest putters I've ever used but it is very solid. It has much better feel than the Ping Anser but not quite as soft at the Odyssey 990 I played with the stronomic insert in it. With the stronomic insert, you could play all types of balls and not tell a whole lot of difference feel wise. With the Anser 2, you can definitely feel and hear the difference depending on the type of ball used.

Performance
Less-Avg-More
The Anser 2 provides better length control over the original Ping Anser because it has a much bigger sweet spot. I also feel I have much better control than the Odyssey putters with the Anser 2. With the Odyssey, the ball seemed to, at times, jump off of the stronomic insert with the same stroke and length of takeaway. I've talked to others that felt the same way there. The Anser 2 provides consistent results on short and long putts.

Looks
Traditional look with the plumbers neck, steel grey color and white site line. I've always loved the looks of the Anser style putters and the Anser 2 is by far my favorite. As stated before, it is very easy to line up and sits square each time you set it down. That definitely breeds confidence before you've ever struck a putt.

Summary
The Ping Anser 2 putter can be used by all golfers no matter the handicap. This is the same putter that Tiger Woods used prior to turning professional (he still uses the same style putter but it is made by Scotty Cameron and Titleist). Greg Norman, Mark O'Meara and Robert Allenby also use this putter even now. Reasonably priced, great looks, great feel and easy to align. Doesn't get any better than that! To purchase your ping anser contact us at Golf Traders today on (02) 9130 1981.

Finding the right 'Bounce' on your Wedges

You may have heard the term 'bounce' mentioned before regarding wedges: gap wedges, sand irons and lob wedges'. We thought we would help clear up any confusion around what 'bounce' is by providing you with a definition, so you can make the right decision about what 'bounce' will be right for you on your wedges.

Definition of bounce: Measurement in degrees of the angle from the front edge of a club's sole to the point that actually rests on the ground at address. The middle or rear of many soles is lower than the front edge. Bounce is most commonly applied to wedges. More bounce will keep the club from digging too deeply into turf or sand.
The amount of bounce needed depends on conditions. If you play courses with soft, fluffy sand, you'll need more bounce. If the courses you play typically have harder sand, you'll need less bounce. Playing from fairway - less bounce.

The type of swing can influence the amount of bounce needed, too. Players who swing their wedges steeply into impact need more bounce. Players who sweep through and undercut need less bounce.

At golf traders, we have an excellent range of wedges with varying lofts and degrees of bounce. When you see writing on a wedge, typically there will be two numbers: the first being loft eg - 56, and the second number being bounce eg -10 (10/11 is a standard amount of bounce, 8 is less bounce, and 14 more bounce.) You can easily get an idea of what bounce our wedges have by looking at those two numbers as in one of our photo's. For example, the Callaway wedge in the photo on this post has 58 degrees loft with 10 degrees bounce.

Blades Vs Cavity Back Irons

Here's an interesting article i found online, written by an ex-Hogan golf employee known on the internet as 'The Wedge Guy'. You might find it interesting...

'As I've spent 50 years playing this crazy game, and 25+ years in the equipment industry, I've had a number of eye-opening "epiphanies" (the dictionary defines "epiphany" as "a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something.").

One of those came in the mid-1990's as I was reviewing some Iron Byron results we were doing at Hogan.

Let me set this up by saying that I've always played blades - I like the shot control, trajectory and feel of them, not to mention the clean compact appearance behind the ball.

But for a few years prior to this time, I was playing Hogan Edge cavity back forgings. They felt OK, and my handicap stayed about scratch, but my game seemed different. There certainly was no question that they were forgiving.

Back to the research. I was looking at a chart of shot patterns of different irons we were testing, and was particularly struck by something I saw.

With Iron Byron set to swing a 6-iron with about 165 yards of distance, the cavity back irons we were testing were producing a pattern on dead center hits that was about 8' wide and about 15-17' long !

These are duplicate swings, dead center impact, and these shots are coming out 3-4' right or left of the target line, and as much as 8-9' short or long !

Not just with one model of iron, but with nearly every cavity back we tested. Now, realize that as we moved the impact further from the center of the face, the forgiveness factor was excellent, but I was puzzled by that "dead center" pattern.

Then I looked at the chart for the new Apex blade we were developing. On heel misses, it was slightly worse than the cavity back models.

On toe misses, the Apex was significantly worse (blades have very little mass out on the toe).

But on dead center hits - our shot pattern was about 1/4 the size of the cavity back pattern ! In other words, the perfect shots were much better !

So that got me thinking. My next round of golf, I dusted off my old set of Joe Powell blades, and I had an eye-opening day.

I was playing very well at the time, but not making that many birdies. That day I hit it within 10' of the flag a number of times, and while I did experience some misses that were worse than I had been getting with the Edge irons, my best shots were better than they had been in some time.

One of my friends who knows my game well exclaimed, "Where's that guy been ?"

He went on to explain that he had noticed I had not been "knocking down flags" for some time, which I usually did at least once or twice a round.

So, I made a permanent switch back to blade irons, my reasoning being that I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I've kept that philosophy consistent. It's a common belief that mid- to high-handicap players need all the help they can get, and maybe that's true, but I firmly believe that more golfers can play blades than you might think - maybe even you !

There are some very good ones on the market now that have worked on the toe-hit forgiveness, so you might be surprised if you took a set of demos out for a round or two'.

~

At Golf Traders, we stock leading brands in both Blades and Cavatiy Back's. Whatever your choice, Golf Traders can equip you with a quality set of Irons.
