Golf News

The Tiger is back!

Tiger Woods broke through this week for his first official PGA Tour Victory in 923 days, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by 5 strokes. The win comes just 2 weeks before the start of the years first major, which demonstrates timing almost as perfect as that shown by Tiger in previous years. Twice before, Tiger has won at Bay Hill, and then gone on to win at Augusta. Will he win again this year? Who knows…..for those who like a punt, the bookies seem to think so, Tiger is currently the favourite with sports tab at $4, while Rory McIroy is paying $6, Adam Scott $23, and Jason Day $26.

The Tour heads to Texas this week for the Redstone Championship, where Phil Mickelson will be defending his 2011 title. Meanwhile down under, a lot of the up and coming young Aussie Talent will be competing in the New Zealand PGA Championship. Good luck to all those involved!

This weeks Golf Tip:

This week’s tip comes from short game expert Dave Pelz:

The finesse wedge swing motion, unlike the power swing, should not contain coiling of the upper body against the lower body. By simply keeping your upper body in sync with your lower body rotation, you can create beautifully smooth swings and repeatable results. If you’ve ever tossed a medicine ball underhanded, you know the feel of this synchronised swing motion. By using a short backswing with a slightly longer follow through, it’s easy to produce an accelerating, stable club head thru impact.

G’day Golfers,

Golf News

Congratulations to Luke Donald for his win in the Transitions Championship. As a result of his win, Donald regains the world’s number 1 spot, and is now taking a 2 week break to freshen up before the US Masters. Meanwhile, significant changes to the structure of the US PGA Tour qualifying system, as well as a new start to their season, were announced this week. The changes mean all 50 new PGA Tour cards will be awarded through the Nationwide Tour, with the annual tour school tournament being held solely for entry onto the Nationwide tour. The changes will come into effect in October 2013. During the debate stage of the proposed US PGA Tour changes, there were concerns raised in Australia about how the proposed changes will affect our tour, given that the Australasian PGA Tour events commence towards the end of the calendar year. Let’s hope the changes don’t make it difficult for Australian PGA Tour promoters and players.

This weeks Golf Tip:

This week’s golf tip comes from PGA Pro Paul Hart:

Sometimes it’s difficult trying to decide what to work on in the swing first. With so many moving parts, if we change one thing, like the takeaway for example, this could change other things about our swing.

Paul says ‘the first thing to check, like any machine, is to make sure it runs smoothly. You have to be able to start, change, and stop the movement with good control. Next is to make sure the power control is good so as ball control is possible’.

As Paul says ‘What moves the swing is the pivot of the shoulders. Left shoulder out – left shoulder in. If the pivot is done with good balance and rhythm you have a sound basis to examine the other machinery; the bits that cause the power and accuracy – consistently. If you’re hitting bad shots, it likely it’s caused by a faulty pivot’

Paul is available for coaching in Sydney & Orange, and can be contacted on 0412 070 820.

Golf News

Congratulations to Justin Rose for winning the World Golf Championships last week. With his win, Rose has moved into the top 10 in the world rankings, climbing up to number 7.

A lot of the talk this week has been on Tiger Woods withdrawl from the event. Tiger withdrew on Sunday reporting tightness in his left ankle. Woods is reporting that he got good news from his doctor, and is hopeful he will tee it up at The Bay Hill Invitational next week.

Meanwhile, the tour will move onto the Transitions Championship, in Palm Harbour Florida. Gary Woodland is the defending champion, and has switched coaches since his win last year. He is now being coached by Butch Harmon in an effort to learn how to win majors. He will want to play well in his defence this year, but judging from his comments during his press conference this week, his focus is on Augusta a few weeks from now.

This weeks Golf Tip:

This week’s golf tip is a continuation of last week, and is from Golf Coach Roger Podmore. Here are 2 more tips to help you prepare for an important round of golf:

Learn to minimize damage

Even the best players feel a little nervous and anxious at the start so it's fine to play conservatively. Stick with your favorite club from the tee and avoid the trouble with clever strategy. This doesn't mean that you should try and steer the ball out of trouble. You must learn to commit to each shot and let rip with your own natural swing.

To minimize damage in your round when you're feeling a little uneasy, think of what you are going to do with each shot when you are within ten meters of each shot. Learning to perform well under pressure takes some courage; you ultimately need to trust yourself because you can pull off great shots even when the nerves are tingling.

Enjoy the challenge

I enjoy playing tough, long golf courses and the challenge of playing different creative shots to get my juices flowing. No matter how good a player you become most golf courses will throw surprises at you. Like me just rely on your natural game to see you through. You should strive to hit each shot naturally and freely.
Forget about stress or pressure they are only words, it’s just another game of golf. Only you can make the decision to have a bad day. Only you can make the decision to have pressure or stress in your game.

Golf Traders Newsletter March 8

Hi Golfers,

Hope you’ve had a good week. This is the 5th Golf Traders Newsletter, enjoy the read…..

Golf News

Congratulations to Rory McIlroy who is now the world’s number 1 golfer. Rory has come along way since chipping wiffle balls into his washing machine, on televison as a child. His dream to become the best golfer in the world is now a reality. It is estimated that there are roughly 26 million people worldwide who play golf, so being the best out of 26 million is quite an accomplishment! At just 22 yrs of age, Rory becomes the 2nd youngest world #1 ever, (the youngest being Tiger Woods who was 21).

The PGA Tour travels to The Blue Monster at Doral this week for the World Golf Championship. The event will see another outstanding field that includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and numerous others.

This weeks Golf Tip:

This week’s golf tip comes from Golf Coach Roger Podmore. Here are 3 tips to help you prepare for an important round of golf:

1) Know your swing and body. Don’t change your normal game plan and routine especially if your current swing and strategy has helped you play to or better your handicap. Just make sure your body is hydrated and you have eaten plenty of carbohydrates to keep your body working for three hours. I like to eat and drink every three holes so my body and mind stays fully charged. Next time you watch a tournament on TV watch how many times tournament players eat and drink during a round of golf.

Your body and swing won’t work if you don’t stretch all your leg muscles and upper arm muscles and hit at least 10 or more balls on the driving range before you hit off. Start with your wedge and work up to your driver and then spend 15 minutes on putting green working on short putts first then long putts.

2) Warm up

Warming up is like preparing your car for a trip, check water, oil, tyre pressure and gas.
So if you don’t get your muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons ready for play you won’t achieve your goal.

Remember it is too late to be making adjustments to your swing. Just stick with what you've got and trust that your current golf swing will deliver a good round of golf.

If you're not happy with your shots on the day wait till after the game to fine tune your swing. When you hit a bad shot during a round don’t ask yourself what went wrong with that shot, because you might open up the pandora’s box in your head and you will totally stuff your game.

Let it go and remember every time you hit a bad shot you are closer to hitting a great shot.
It's tempting to over analyze before and during a big game. Most players hope they hit a good shot off the first tee, and others wonder how last year’s champion is going or what am I doing wrong.

“Don’t visit the Pandora’s Box in your Head”.

Just remember there is no one walking around with a sign saying you can’t have a hole in one or you can’t hole your shots from off the green. If you can focus your mind on what you want to achieve and leave the analytical stuff for the drive home you should do just fine.

3) Have a Positive mindset

Let others do the worrying while you focus on the shot at hand and manage yourself around the golf course. Over the course of three or four hours this mindset will save you plenty of shots and untold energy.

Just remember if it is an important round for you it is going to be important for everyone else.
So don't panic or throw in the towel after one or two poor shots. Focus on the next shot being a great shot which is one thing that has helped me tremendously over the last 40 years. The ability to stay relaxed and snap out of any bad thoughts has helped me to minimize bad rounds.
